Types of Die Casting Process

  • Hot Chamber Die Casting: a type of die casting process which uses alloys with low melting temperatures, such as zinc alloys, copper, lead, etc. The advantages including fast cycle time and the convenience of melting metal in the casting machine. The disadvantage is the limitation to use with low melting point metals, while aluminum cannot be used because it absorbs some iron in the molten path.
  • Cold Chamber Die Casting: a type of die casting process used for alloys with high melting temperatures, such as aluminum alloys and zinc alloys with a large composition of aluminium, magnesium and copper. The main drawback of this system is the slow cycle time.

Materials of Die Casting Manufacturing

We are dedicated to aluminum die casting and zinc die casting. Common materials for manufacturing die castings are as below. Other options needed please contact us.

  • Aluminum Alloy: 360.0, A360.0, ADC12, 380.0, A380.0, 383.0, etc.
  • Zinc Alloy: Zamak-2, Zamak-3, Zamak-5, etc.

Surface Finishes of Die Cast Parts

Custom surface finishing services are available if you can’t find what you need here.

  • Plating: a process of coating a thin layer of metal on the substrate through the electrodeposition of metal ions, can improve the aesthetic appeal and functional characteristics, including nickel plating, chrome plating, tin plating, etc.
  • Sand Blasting: a process of applying high pressure to push solid particles across the object surface at high speed to alter the surface roughness, can eliminate burrs or edge profiling on die cast components.
  • Rubber Casting: a protective coating is applied onto or impregnated into a substrate or an object for protective, decorative, or functional purposes, used on many die casting components like seals, gaskets, o-rings, stoppers and plungers.
  • Polishing: a process through which to smooth the surface of an object using an abrasive or a work wheel, generally used to enhance the appearance, remove oxidization, also acts as a protective sealant to the metal surface.
  • Pad Printing: a special printing method to transfer the color and image that you wanted on surfaces.
  • Color Electrophoresis: a wide range of electrophoresis colors based on your requirements, to achieve high corrosion resistance and good protection.
  • Anodizing: creating a corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant layer, die cast parts can be anodized in different colors, such as blue, yellow, red, clear, black, and gold. Anodized aluminum is the most common.
  • Powder Coating: a process of electrostatic spraying powdered paint on the parts and then baking in the oven, which creates durable wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant layer, suitable for all die casting products.
  • Wet Painting: the process of applying liquid paint to a metal product for finishing, suitable for all metal castings.
  • As-Cast: the metal casting parts have not received finishing or treatment of any kind including heat treatment after casting.

What is Die Casting? – Overview of Die Casting Process

Die casting is a manufacturing process in which forcing molten metal into a mold cavity under high pressure. The mold cavity consists of two hardened tool steel dies. The steel die, also known as die casting mold, has the exactly same shape as the part to be cast, it can be used repeatedly. Most die castings are manufactured from non-ferrous metals, including aluminum, zinc, magnesium, copper, lead, and tin-based alloys. Hot chamber and cold chamber machines are the most widely used die casting machines. Die casting is a popular choice for needs of high volume production of complex parts.

Advantages of Die Casting Process and Die Cast Parts

  • Affordable for large quantities of small to medium-sized parts
  • Good detail, fine surface quality, and high dimensional accuracy
  • Closer tolerances and more intricate designs than pieces made by other means
  • Fewer secondary processing than stamping, forging and some other methods
  • Die castings can be found in a variety of products, at all levels of industry and commerce
  • Die casting is considered to be a comparatively sustainable metal forming process.
