In die casting industry, hot-chamber machines and cold-chamber machines are two basic types of die casting machines. These are evaluated according to how much clamping force they can exert. Usually are 300tons to 4000tons. Our company mainly uses 300tons to 800tons of die casting machines.
Hot-chamber die casting machines, also called gooseneck machines, which are rely on molten metal pools to feed the moulds. When the cycle starts, the machine’s piston retracts, filling the “gooseneck” with molten metal. The pneumatic- or hydraulic-powered piston then forces this metal out of the gooseneck into the mould. This system has some advantages such as fast cycle times (about 15 cycles a minute) and ease of melting metal in the casting machine. Its disadvantage is that it is limited to use with low-melting point metals. Aluminum cannot be used because it absorbs some iron in the molten pool.So hot-chamber machines are primarily used with zinc-, tin-, and lead-based alloys.
Another kind of basic type die casting machine is cold-chamber die casting machine, which is required when materials cannot be used in hot chamber machines. These metals are aluminum, magnesium, copper and zinc alloys with high aluminum content. The manufacturing process of these machines starts with melting metal in a separate furnace. Then, a precise amount of molten metal is delivered to a cold chamber machine, where it is delivered to an unheated injection chamber (or syringe).Next, the projectile is driven into the mold by a hydraulic or mechanical piston. The system needs to transfer molten metal from the melting furnace to the cold chamber machine, which takes more time, so this is its biggest disadvantage.
